2024 Sport Pembrokeshire Awards Part 2
The category of Boys (U16) Sporting Achievement of the Year was sponsored by the FAW and the finalists were: Carter Heywood (Winner), Hugo Boyce and Ned Rees-Wigmore.
Carter Heywood (Winner):
Carter Heywood’s exceptional football journey this year showcases his dedication and skill on the pitch. At just 16, he debuted for Swansea U18s in the Premier Development League and has frequently contributed to the U18 team’s performances. Representing Wales U16s internationally, Carter played in Ireland, Austria, and across Europe, taking on roles from player to captain against nations like Norway and Czechia. His recent role as Wales U16 captain in the Victory Shield was a testament to his strong leadership.
Ned Rees-Wigmore (Runner-Up):
At just 14, Ned Rees-Wigmore has established himself as an outstanding hockey and tennis talent. He has been selected for Wales U18’s Hockey and he captained Wales U16’s at the European Championships in Croatia. Additionally, Ned is Swansea Hockey Club’s top goal-scorer across five men’s teams, helping Swansea U18’s win the Wales National Cup. His athletic range extends to tennis, where he won the Pembrokeshire Junior Open U18’s Singles and contributed to the Welsh National Schools Tennis Championship victory. As Wales’s youngest hockey County Pathway Assistant Coach, Ned exemplifies dedication, skill and leadership.
Hugo Boyce (Runner-Up):
At just 13, Hugo Boyce undertook an extraordinary cycling challenge, completing the nearly 1,000-mile journey from Land’s End to John O'Groats. Over nine days, he averaged over 100 miles daily, conquering the difficult ascents of the Pennines and Cairngorms. Hugo’s determination shone as he navigated harsh conditions, showcasing maturity and mental resilience rare for his age. His successful journey, completed with remarkable perseverance, is believed to be the best-known time for an under 16 cyclist.
